Meditation reduces loneliness

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Many elderly people spend their last years alone. Spouses pass and children scatter. But being lonely is much more than a silent house and a lack of companionship. Over time, loneliness not only takes a toll on the psyche but can have a serious physical impact as well.

Feeling lonely has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression and even premature death. Developing effective treatments to reduce loneliness in older adults is essential, but previous treatment efforts have had limited success.

What to do? Researchers at UCLA now report that a simple meditation program lasting just eight weeks reduced loneliness in older adults. Further, knowing that loneliness is associated with an increase in the activity of inflammation-related genes that can promote a variety of diseases, the researchers examined gene expression and found that this same form of meditation significantly reduced expression of inflammatory genes.

In the current online edition of the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, senior study author Steve Cole, a UCLA professor of medicine and psychiatry and a member of the Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at UCLA, and colleagues report that the two-month program of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which teaches the mind to simply be attentive to the present and not dwell in the past or project into the future, successfully reduced the feelings of loneliness.

Remarkably, the researchers said, MBSR also altered the genes and protein markers of inflammation, including the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and a group of genes regulated by the transcription factor NF-kB. CRP is a potent risk factor for heart disease, and NF-kB is a molecular signal that activates inflammation.

Inflammation is a natural component of the immune system and can help fight a wide variety of bodily insults, ranging from infections to a whack by a hammer. But chronic inflammation is now known to be a primary player in the pathology of many diseases and psychological disorders.

"Our work presents the first evidence showing that a psychological intervention that decreases loneliness also reduces pro-inflammatory gene expression," Cole said. "If this is borne out by further research, MBSR could be a valuable tool to improve the quality of life for many elderly."

In the study, 40 adults between the ages of 55 and 85 were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group that did not meditate. All the participants were assessed at the beginning and the end of the study using an established loneliness scale. Blood samples were also collected at the beginning and end to measure gene expression and levels of inflammation.

The meditators attended weekly two-hour meetings in which they learned the techniques of mindfulness, including awareness and breathing techniques. They also practiced mindfulness meditation for 30 minutes each day at home and attended a single daylong retreat.

These MBSR participants self-reported a reduced sense of loneliness, while their blood tests showed a significant decrease in the expression of inflammation-related genes.

"While this was a small sample, the results were very encouraging," said Dr. Michael Irwin, a professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and director of the Cousins Center. "It adds to a growing body of research that is showing the positive benefits of a variety of meditative techniques, including tai chi and yoga."

Just last month, for example, Dr. Helen Lavretsky, a UCLA professor of psychiatry and a Cousins Center member, published a study showing that a form of yogic meditation involving chanting also reduced inflammatory gene expression, as well as stress levels, among individuals who care for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

"These studies begin to move us beyond simply connecting the mind and genome, and identify simple practices that an individual can harness to improve human health," Irwin said.

Quark matter?s connection with the Higgs: Heavy ion collisions delve deeper into the origin of (visible) mass

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? You may think you've heard everything you need to know about the origin of mass. After all, scientists colliding protons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe recently presented stunning evidence strongly suggesting the existence of a long-sought particle called the Higgs boson, thought to "impart mass to matter." But while the Higgs particle may be responsible for the mass of fundamental particles such as quarks, quarks alone can't account for the mass of most of the visible matter in the universe -- that's everything we see and sense around us.

To get a grasp on what holds these visible forms of matter together -- everything from stars to planets to people -- you have to understand how quarks and gluons interact. That's the essence of quark matter physics -- and the Quark Matter 2012 international conference, taking place in Washington, D.C., August 12-18.

"We're studying the 99 percent of the mass of the visible universe that isn't explained by the Higgs," says Peter Steinberg, a physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and a keen participant in the Quark Matter conference.

Visible matter, he explains, is everything made of atoms, which get their mass mainly from the protons and neutrons that make up atomic nuclei. The electrons orbiting around the nucleus contribute practically nothing. But the protons and neutrons, each made of three quarks, are much more massive than the sum of their constituent particles. Where does all the "extra" mass come from?

The answer, physicists believe, lies in how the quarks interact via the exchange of gluons, massless particles that hold the quarks together via nature's strongest force, and interactions among the gluons themselves. To tease apart the features of this force, which gets stronger and stronger if you try to pull the subatomic quarks apart, physicists accelerate atomic nuclei (a.k.a. heavy ions) to near light speed, where the gluons become dominant, and then steer them into head-on collisions at particle accelerators like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven and the Large Hadron Collider in Europe. These collisions recreate conditions that last existed early in the universe, before quarks joined up to form protons and neutrons. Studying the behavior of "free" quarks and gluons in this primordial quark-gluon plasma should help scientists better understand the strong force, and how it generates so much of the mass we see when the particles coalesce to form ordinary matter.

So, while visible matter accounts for a mere fraction of the total universe -- just five percent, the rest being composed of dark matter and mysterious dark energy -- it's enough to keep physicists like Steinberg busy for a while!

Better Not to Have a Web Site than to have a Web Site that is Less ...

We think it is better for an innovative tech business targeting enterprise IT prospects to delay construction of a web site until resources are available to get the job done properly. Doing the job properly will, of course, mean different things for different businesses; however, at a minimum, a useful web site will incorporate current design themes along with coherent editorial content. Simply throwing a web site up to have a site online, in our opinion, makes little sense.

Further, management must consider, and provide for, the regular maintenance required to maintain a web site for search engine optimization. In our experience freshness of content is a very important factor for search engine indexing programs that automatically assign ranking to web sites in similar business categories. Therefore, if resources are not available to periodically provide fresh editorial content to a web site, once again, we think it is better not to get started with an online web site promotional effort.

Of course, for tech businesses operating covertly, and under the radar of the enterprise IT software market, choosing not to proceed with a web site ought to be an easy decision. For these businesses it makes sense to either have no public marketing communications effort, whatsoever, or to to channel all resources to one promotional medium ? usually telemarketing. In fact, we think that many well organized early stage tech business efforts naturally embrace the type of market outreach effort that we have described.

As we have mentioned earlier in this blog, a blog platform like WordPress (http://www NULL.wordpress NULL.org) constitutes an accessible solution for businesses that must launch a web site effort. Visual Themes offered for these web site platforms are generally current and easily implemented. Communities of users often provide highly useful tools at zero or low cost that can be used to enhance the visibility of these blogs for search engines. Therefore, we think that for a business that must have an online presence, a blog platform should be very high on the list of possible solutions. It is important to keep in mind that the most important element for a blog is editorial content. Therefore, it makes sense to plan on regular (if not daily) updates to web site content as a primary method of attracting visitors to a site.

If your business requires an online presence, but you lack the internal resources to plan your site, build it, and then maintain it, you ought to consider a business like IMB Enterprises, Inc. We welcome opportunities to discuss requirements like yours with business owners. Please call Ira Michael Blonder at +1 631-673-2929 to further a discussion. Miami Real Estate ? What Is A Passive House? Miami Has Them?

August 13th, 2012

What Is?A Passive House?? Are There Any Passive Homes In Miami?

A passive house is?described as a ?super well insulated, airtight home,??empowered ?to cut energy consumption by 90%.

The origin of the term was ?Passivhaus? and it is a strict high-efficiency building standard developed in Germany in the ?80?s.? It is about achieving a standard of energy efficiency in a building which reduces the building?s ecological footprint.

passivhaus miami south florida - real estate - green house - ecofriendlyThe objective of this movement is to build structures which require little energy for heating or cooling of? our spaces.? It is approached as part of the process of the design, then becomes a component of ??the architectural design.? The passive building idea is more often associated with new buildings but it is also used for refurbishing structures.

Most of the passive house buildings in the world have been built in Germany, the Scandinavian countries and New Zealand.? The German Passivhaus Institute is presently at odds with the American Passive House Institute, on account of the American counterparts? proposal to relax certain standards.

Cost Of Passive Houses

A Passive House costs more to build than the average house.? A home buyer has a choice between a house that will cost thousands of dollars a year to heat or cool versus a high performance house that will cost very little to heat or cool.? Access to solar energy, superinsulation, advanced window technology, air tightness, ?energy recovery ventilation are all components of the passive design.

Passive Houses In Tropical Climates: e.g. Miami!

Passive Houses in tropical climates are very much in the developmental stage not to say in a ?wish? stage!? Considering Miami?s population density, continued growth and construction, and what it takes to cool our homes, wouldn?t it be brilliant to allocate some thought and resources?to this building type for Miami?s future?? I know little or nothing about Passive Houses; however, the thought they might help lighten the impact of Miami?s buildings and endless construction?on the environment is exciting!

I couldn?t find any trait of a Passive House in Miami, do we have any?

A Passive House is a vehicle to achieving a net-zero energy building!

Curious about your? Miami home?s value?? We will provide a no-obligation market evaluation of your home today.

Syrian fighter jet crashes in flames, cause disputed

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - A Syrian warplane crashed in flames in eastern Syria in disputed circumstances on Monday as President Bashar al-Assad's forces pursued their drive to quell rebels in Aleppo and elsewhere.

State media said technical problems had caused the crash and a search was under way for the pilot who had ejected from the aircraft during a "regular training mission".

Hours earlier, rebels said they had shot down a plane in the same area and an opposition activist who said he was in the northeastern town of Mohassen posted a video of a fighter jet bursting into flames while under heavy ground fire.

The video could not be independently verified. The downing of a warplane would be a rare coup for lightly armed rebels up against the superior weaponry of Assad's forces, which have made increasing use of air power in recent months.

Reuters journalists have seen fighter jets firing rockets at rebel-held villages and districts in the northern city of Aleppo, the main battle front in Syria so far this month.

Fawaz Zakri, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council visiting rebel fighters in Aleppo, urged outside powers to send arms and ammunition to help Syrians defend themselves.

"We are not asking for tanks or artillery launchers. We need anti-aircraft weapons and rockets so that we can stop this takeover by the Assad army and daily shelling," he said, toting a black rifle near frontlines in the Saif al-Dawla district.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are believed to be paying for weapons reaching rebels via Turkey, while the United States and Britain say they are stepping up non-lethal assistance. Assad's main military suppliers are thought to be Russia and Iran.

BODIES IN STREET

Four civilians lay dead in a nearby street in Saif al-Dawla, next to the bitterly contested Salaheddine district. All were victims of army sniper fire, the rebel Free Syrian Army said.

The bodies of a man and a woman slumped in a bullet-riddled yellow taxi. A bloated male corpse lay on a stinking pile of rubbish. Another dead man sprawled in the street, his face purple and bloated, with several dolls lying near his hand.

Syria's uprising began in March last year with peaceful demonstrations for change, inspired by Arab revolts elsewhere. Assad's violent response spawned an insurgency, plunging Syria into a civil war in which more than 18,000 civilians, soldiers and rebels have been killed, opposition sources estimate.

More than 50 Syrians, including 39 civilians, were killed across the country on Monday, according to an opposition watchdog, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Daily death tolls have ranged far higher than this in recent weeks.

The head of a faltering U.N. monitoring mission said violence was intensifying across Syria and accused both sides of ignoring the plight of civilians caught up in the conflict.

"The indiscriminate use of heavy weapons by the government and targeted attacks by the opposition in urban centers are inflicting a heavy toll on innocent civilians," General Babacar Gaye said in Damascus. "I deeply regret that none of the parties has prioritized the needs of civilians.

The mandate for the U.N. monitors, whose original mission was to observe an April ceasefire that never took hold, expires on August 19. Their numbers have already been cut to a third because violence has made it impossible for them to move around.

The relentless conflict and disagreements among big powers and regional rivals foiled diplomatic efforts led by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, who resigned in frustration.

The United States and Turkey indicated at the weekend they would consider ways of helping the Syrian opposition, with a no-fly zone among many options, and preparing for a post-Assad era.

Russia and China firmly oppose outside military intervention in Syria, not that Western powers have until now shown any stomach for any Libya-style air campaign or other overt action.

LOOSE TALK

Germany said it was unwise even to raise the subject.

"We believe that the discussion about a military intervention could exacerbate things because it could increase the danger of the situation in the entire region getting out of control," a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in Berlin.

"We continue to work on bringing about a change of heart in Russia and China that would enable decisive action by the U.N. Security Council," he said, alluding to past vetoes by Moscow and Beijing of Western-backed resolutions on Syria.

China said it would host Assad aide Bouthaina Shaaban on Tuesday and consider separately inviting opposition figures as part of efforts towards resolving the crisis.

Syria's ambassador to Iran said Damascus would welcome dialogue with opposition groups, as long as Assad supervised the talks - making them a non-starter for rebels.

Hamed Hassan said his country, under attack from "terrorist groups", had co-operated with Annan's peace plan, but that other countries had scuppered it, Iran's state news agency reported.

With diplomacy deadlocked, even efforts to bring aid to suffering Syrian civilians in war zones have stuttered.

U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos will go to Syria on Tuesday to discuss how to increase emergency aid, but diplomats said fighting must ease to allow access to trouble spots.

"Two million people are now estimated to have been affected by the crisis and over one million have been internally displaced," a U.N. statement said.

More than 4,000 Syrians have fled to Turkey in the past three days, bringing the total there to almost 60,000, Turkish authorities said. Nearly 150,000 registered refugees from Syria are now in Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, U.N. figures show.
