MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) ? Family and friends of a 4-year-old boy who was missing for a week awaited word Friday on what led investigators to return to his home on a mid-Michigan Indian reservation, where his family said the child's body was found under a porch.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night at a vigil for Carnel Chamberlain at the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's reservation in Isabella County where he had lived with his mother and her boyfriend.

"Nothing this monumentally horrific has ever happened in our community," said family spokesman Kevin Chamberlain, who grew up on the reservation and served as tribal chief from 1997 to 1999.

"Right now, it's a very somber place with a lot of broken hearts," Chamberlain told The Associated Press on Friday.

Carnel was reported missing June 21 while in the care of his mother's boyfriend. For days, investigators searched woods, ponds and the tribe's wastewater treatment areas to no avail. Police said the boyfriend was not very cooperative and has consulted a lawyer.

Carnel's body was discovered on Thursday under a wood porch or deck at his single-story home, said Chamberlain, who is a cousin of Carnel's mother Jaimee Chamberlain.

The body "had to be in a grave. We had looked underneath before and didn't see anything," he said.

He said he didn't know why investigators went back to the house, which had been sealed off by tribal police days earlier. Authorities have announced no arrests.

Federal authorities ? who have jurisdiction over major crimes on Indian reservations ? were silent on the case Friday morning. A tribal spokesman said a news conference planned for Friday afternoon at the Isabella Indian Reservation was canceled. A spokeswoman for a U.S. attorney's office in Detroit, which oversees federal cases in the area, said she had no information.

A tribal police car sat outside the family's house, less than a mile from tribal police headquarters and the offices of the Saginaw Chippewa tribe. Just beyond the offices is the gleaming Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, which attracts gamblers from around the state and is the tribe's financial lifeblood.

Judy Klein, 68, of Mount Pleasant, drove to the boy's home about 70 miles north of Lansing on Friday morning to leave some flowers.

She said she was "sick about it" when she learned of the child's death.

"I'm a mother. I lost a child," she said, trying to hold back tears. "She was 26 and died in her sleep. I know the grief."

Klein left hydrangeas she had grown in her garden.

"This little boy is going back to the earth," she said.

At the vigil Thursday night attended by Jamie Chamberlain and other relatives, participants sang, played drums and spoke urging love and healing in the face of tragedy.

Carnel "didn't have time to grow up and enjoy life," tribal chief Dennis Kequom told the gathering. "He'll always be with us in our hearts."

Google?s New Voice Search Versus Apple?s Siri

When Google announced Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), they showed off the new voice actions as well as search cards. Naturally, everyone soon became curious about how the new voice actions compared to its Apple competitor and voice assistant Siri. While most Androidians didn?t have a spare iPhone 4S on hand, one blogger for TechnoBuffalo did, and was kind enough to put them to the test.

While this is just a quick comparison between Siri and the preview build of Android 4.1, you?ll see Google?s new voice search is quite impressive and for all intents and purposes, performs faster. We?ll have to see a few more in-depth head-to-heads, but this round looks to go to Android.

Report: 'The Office' losing B.J. Novak as a regular

Dunder-Mifflin temp Ryan Howard is cutting back his hours at ?The Office,? according to TV Guide. While the man behind the character, B.J. Novak, will no longer be a full-time presence, he still plans to pop in as Ryan, as a writer and as a director for ?The Office? in episodes to come, according to the magazine.

NBC declined to comment.

Novak?s reduced role closely follows his good friend Mindy Kaling?s decision to leave ?The Office? and begin her own show, ?The Mindy Project,? which premieres in the fall on Fox. The departure of Kaling?s Kelly Kapoor and Novak?s smaller park mark big changes for ?The Office? which saw its marquee character, Michael Scott (Steve Carell), leave Pennsylvania for Colorado in season seven?s humanizing, heartbreaking finale, ?Goodbye Michael.?

As for how Ryan will end up at "The Office" less, details haven?t been revealed. Michael had a final ?That?s what she said? when Pam Halpert (n?e Beesly, played by Jenna Fisher) wished him a tearful farewell at the airport, so we?re hoping for a similarly apt moment for Ryan. Perhaps he?ll be fired for arson ? la season five?s ?The Fire??

Ryan?s time at Dunder-Mifflin was a bit of a roller coaster. Beginning as a temp, he quickly moved up the ranks, becoming the youngest vice president in the company?s history. It?s an understatement to say the promotion went to the youngster?s head, though, as he became ?The Office?s? most condescending jerk and a lover of cocaine before being violently yanked down to earth when his ?business tactics? were exposed as fraud.

Yet, Michael rehired him as a temp, so back from New York to Scranton Ryan came. Sporting a new ?hipster? wardrobe with a slew of Macy?s-quality cardigans and chunky-framed glasses, he attempted the social media start-up WUPFH and got back to flirting with Kelly and her obsessive affections.

With such a great character stepping back from the show, it?s hard to face the fact that James Spader?s Robert California will also be exiting while John Krasinski?s Jim Halpert and Ed Helms? Andy Bernard will be scaling back on their episode appearances in light of their increasingly busy movie schedules.

For all of us ?Office? fans, Ryan and his ever-odd antics will be greatly missed.

Report: News Corp. board approves company split

NEW YORK (AP) ? The board of directors at Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has approved a plan that calls for splitting the global media conglomerate into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and another its entertainment operations, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal, which is News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, cited a person familiar with the situation late Wednesday saying the board voted unanimously to approve the plan. It said the move is expected to be announced early Thursday.

News Corp. spokeswoman Julie Henderson had no comment on the report.

The New York-based company confirmed Tuesday that it was weighing the plan. Its stock has jumped 11 percent since the news of the proposed split emerged.

Under the proposal, News Corp. will be divided into two publicly traded companies. One entity will operate as a newspaper and book publishing firm. The other will be an entertainment company that includes Fox News channel, the Fox broadcast TV network and the 20th Century Fox movie studio.

The publishing side is expected to be much smaller, with some analysts valuing it at about $5 billion, compared to the current market value for News Corp. as a whole of about $54 billion.

Industry analysts say the faster growing pay-TV segment would be valued more highly by new investors not willing to buy shares in a company burdened by a newspaper industry in decline.

A question remains, however, about which entity would bear the financial risks of the ongoing U.K. probe into phone hacking and bribery. Besides legal costs, News Corp. also faces potential fines in the U.S. under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which punishes companies that have bribed officials abroad.

British authorities have been probing allegations that News Corp. journalists at its now-shuttered News of the World and other papers hacked into phones and bribed public officials to gain exclusive information.

The splitting of News Corp. would be a symbolic turning point for its 81-year-old CEO. Murdoch's media empire was built on the foundation of a single Australian newspaper he inherited from his father.

We've seen more than a few energy monitors, but how many of them offer a pretty light show on the side? The EnergyBuddy -- first unveiled as a prototype at CES but just now inching toward a full launch -- is a complete home energy-tracking system brought to you by Cali-based startup FutureDash. Starting at $99, it keeps tabs on users' energy consumption with a square-shaped gadget that connects to your network via WiFi or Ethernet. The square glows red, yellow or green depending on how much electricity you're guzzling, and you have the ability to specify what qualifies as acceptable usage.

Naturally, the EnergyBuddy has a few peripherals in tow. A sensor installed at your electrical panel communicates with the rest of the system, and so-called Smart Plugs let you track the energy consumption of individual devices. The iPhone, iPad and desktop apps also offer some pretty in-depth stats, including dollars per hour spent on energy and a chart detailing consumption throughout the day. FutureDash is currently pushing the product on crowd-funding site Indiegogo, and though availability is TBD, you can take a peek at the system in our hands-on video below.

Texas Supreme Court issues important workers' comp ruling (1 of 2 ...

When a worker is injured on the job, he or she can file a workers' compensation claim, no matter who was at fault in the accident. These benefits are very important as they help injured workers pay for medical bills, lost wages and other costs associated with the workplace accident.

Last week, the Texas Supreme Court handed down an important ruling pertaining to workers' compensation claims. In a 5-4 decision, the state's highest court held that injured workers have no right to sue workers' compensation insurance carriers that act in bad faith. The court reasoned that doing so gets in the way of the state's workers' compensation system running smoothly.

The specific case at issue involved the state's largest workers' compensation insurance carrier, Texas Mutual Insurance Co. of Austin. The facts go something like this: A worker from Galveston was hurt on the job and filed a workers' compensation claim. Texas Mutual originally denied benefits after concluding that the worker was injured playing softball, not while performing his job duties.

The worker found legal representation and Texas Mutual eventually agreed to settle the case with the worker. Soon after, the worker sued the company, charging that the delay in getting the benefits damaged his credit, caused his hernias to get worse, and caused him mental anguish, pain and suffering.

A Houston jury awarded the worker $173,500 in damages, plus attorney fees. However, last summer, the Texas Supreme Court overturned the damages award, holding that the worker could not sue under the insurance code or deceptive trade practices law. On the other hand, the court held that the claims could be considered under a bad-faith provision of the law.
